Day Five

Friday, April 15th

Wow, it is hard to believe that we are at the end of this week already.
It has definitely been a strange and exciting one.

The kits do not appear to be much bigger than they were yesterday; however, they are certainly more active and aware. Cuddles is also more aware (or perhaps just more protective) of them now too. She is always near when we check the babies now, when we pet them or bring them out to take pictures, etc.

She seems to be fine with us touching them, etc, but makes sure that we know she is there too. She will nose them or jump into the box to check them after we have handled them. She is also right back to being her affectionate self with us.

At four days old,  the kits eyes are still closed, but they are definitely starting to get sensitive to the light. They burrow their faces into the nest or your hand so as to keep the light off their eyes. A few more are now "popping", rather than lying quietly in our hands.

At least one of them has also started "digging"a lot. We can hear the scrabbling sounds of it's little nails on the bottom of the cardboard box. I am hopeful that all of these things are good signs of their continued growth and health.

As with all things that one reads on the internet, this has to be "taken with a grain of salt", and realize that it may only be one person's experience, and not a common statistic; however, we have read that kits have two hurdles to get passed before you can be sure of their survival.
      1. the first 24-48 hours which we have passed - whew!
      2. between 14-21 days (some do not adjust well/tolerate to the addition of  solid food).
I am trying not to worry about that too much. No sense in fretting when the time has not yet come, nor is there anything we can do about it.

Well, time to check them again as I hear a lot of scrabbling. Okay, I do not need to, I just REALLY want to.
I am the grand bunny, after all, and it is my prerogative.

  1. Dear Grand bunny
You should check with some teachers at your son's school... I bet they would love to have their students follow your bunny blog as part of their science unit. I will keep my fingers crossed between day 14 and day 21.

  2. Dear Dreamer - Thank you for the finger crossing. I am not sure whether this blog is school friendly or not, but I will look into your suggestion. I know that the teachers at my younger son's daycare are all interested.
